Our Behaviour System: A Parent Guide
At South Wirral High School we want every pupil to learn in a calm, safe and positive environment. To support this, we use a clear and consistent behaviour system that helps pupils make good choices, understand expectations and learn from mistakes.
This guide explains the different types of detentions, where they take place, and how the system builds in a fair, staged way.
Our Approach
- We teach and model positive behaviour.

- When behaviour falls below expectations, consequences are fair, consistent and designed to help pupils reset.

Our Staged Behaviour System
Below is an overview of the stages and where each detention occurs.
Punctuality Detentions
When: Every breaktime
Where: Library
Used for: Pupils arriving late to school
Purpose: Reinforces good routines and maximises learning time
Faculty Detentions
When: Breaktime on each faculty’s allocated day
Where: Faculty area
Used for: Low‑level behaviour in a specific subject
Purpose: Quick intervention to address issues before they escalate
Lunch Detentions
When: Daily
Where: E2
Length:30 minutes (or 20 minutes if a reminder of expectations is not required)
Used for: Missing earlier detentions
Conduct concerns identified by the Head of Year
Purpose: Allows reflection and supports pupils to get back on track
Restorative Conversations
When: Daily
Where: Library
Used for: Any pupil removed to a subject removal room
Purpose: Helps pupils understand, repair and return to lessons positively
Faculty Progress Leader (FPL) Detentions
When: Monday, Wednesday & Thursday after school
Where: Main Hall
Length:30 minutes (or 20 minutes if a reminder of expectations is not required)
Used for: ATL1 (lesson removal)
Behaviour concerns in the removal room
Placement in the IEU
Purpose: Focused support and accountability with subject leaders
SLT Detentions (Final Stage of the System)
One‑Hour SLT Detention
When: Tuesday & Friday after school
Where: Canteen
Length: 1 hour
One‑and‑a‑Half‑Hour SLT Detention
Used for:A pupil misses their 1‑hour SLT detention
Where: Canteen
Length: 1 hour 30 mins
Purpose: These are used when behaviour has escalated through earlier stages.
